It might sound a little crazy but mouth taping while you sleep holds numerous health benefits. Let’s first start with what happens when you breathe through your mouth when you sleep.

Mouth breathing can cause:

  • Dry mouth
  • Snoring
  • Sinus congestion.
  • Reduced quality of sleep.
  • Poor CPAP compliance.
  • Cavities.
  • Gum disease.
  • Bad breath.
  • Weight gain.

In children, mouth breathing can have a profound effect, causing crooked teeth, a narrowed jaw, receding chin and constriction of the nose and throat.

Fixing mouth breathing may result in:

  • Less snoring.
  • Deeper, more restful sleep.
  • Better nasal air filtration.
  • Improved mouth pH resulting in better mouth bacteria.
  • Less anxiety.
  • Improved nitric oxide production, which leads to better memory, endurance, immune system, blood pressure, inflammation and sexual function.

How do you mouth tape? It’s not as scary as it seems. You can purchase micropore surgical tape on Amazon for a few dollars and it will be safe to use on your skin, even if you have facial hair. Simply place a piece of tape over mouth when you go to sleep and don’t worry if your nose is congested, this will fix that problem.

Will you have to mouth tape for the rest of your life? No. After time, you will have retrained your body to get used to the new way of breathing and won’t need the tape anymore. Many people claim this has been a life changer for them. What have you got to lose besides a better night’s sleep?

Welcome to my rabbit hole; it’s a place I find myself more often than not. I find a topic that piques my interest and I dig and dig down that rabbit hole until I have a good understanding of it. The topics mostly relate to health, though, they can branch off into quantum physics, psychology, color theory, and sometimes, even aliens. I’ve driven my friends and family crazy over the years with all of the fascinating information I come across and now I have an opportunity to share it all with you; with everything from mouth taping to alternate universes, you’ll find it all here.

I do a lot of research and will link related products on Amazon, some of which are affiliates.

Rabbit Hole #1 – Sulforaphane.

Sulforaphane is currently touted as one of the top anti-aging compounds and for good reason, its many benefits are impressive. It’s a natural plant compound found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, bok choy, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, watercress, and brussel sprouts. Broccoli sprouts contain the highest concentration of the compound by 100 times more than broccoli and are even twice that when frozen. The compound is released from the vegetable when it is broken or chewed and it loses most of its potency when cooked but adding mustard seed to the vegetable will revive its effectiveness.

Sulforaphane is shown to:
– Decrease inflammatory markers by 20% thus slowing the aging process and improving heart health.
– Improve brain function in autism, schizophrenia, and decrease depression.
– Helps to prevent prostate and breast cancer and also slows the growth of cancerous tumors.
– Is a powerful detox secreting toxins such as benzene found in air pollution and cigarettes. It improves liver function.
– In mouse studies, sulforaphane has lowered triglycerides by 20%, the atherogenic index by 50%, and blood sugar by 20%.
– Is a powerful antioxidant and protects the mitochondria.
– Decreases DNA damage by 30%.
– Protects damage from h pylori.
– Improves hormone balance.
– Improves glutathione production in plasma and the human brain.

Broccoli sprouts can easily be added to your diet but it is not recommended to buy them at the store as they can quickly develop salmonella. They can be safely and easily grown at home with a simple sprouting jar and broccoli seed sprouts. Simply place a tablespoon of seeds at the bottom of the jar, cover with warm water and let it sit overnight on your kitchen counter. The next day rinse the seeds with cold water, drain and place the jar in a bowl or on a rack at an angle in direct sunlight. Repeat for 5 days and you will have fresh, ready to eat broccoli sprouts!
